This is a gem of a recording. Even if you only have the slightest interest in brass ensemble music this is worth buying as it will demonstrate to you what awesome sounds are possible in this genre of music when in the hands of its greatest exponents. Two bands with glowing reputations, the Black Dyke Band and the International Staff Band Of The Salvation Army, tackle the works of celebrated composer Peter Graham who, on the evidence of this collection, is able to compose memorable and well crafted brass music for every audience. This two CD set first off showcases the Black Dyke Band playing some of Graham's pure classical brass music, from 'Montage', that grew out of his postgraduate study and research, to "In League With Extraordinary Gentlemen". On the second CD the International Staff Band play some of Graham's more overtly Christian and, in truth, more accessible material. The recordings are complemented by comprehensive sleeve notes. An excellent package.

Two leading brass ensembles playing music written by one of that genre's outstanding contemporary composers.

Whether as arranger or composer, Peter Graham's work has been celebrated by performers and audiences alike. It is his music for British-style brass band that has established his international reputation. He has written for all levels of brass band, from educational concert music to the most demanding test-piece and is in the unique position of having had his music performed at every major brass band competition worldwide.

The double album allows the listener a fine overview of his output particularly, but not exclusively, within the time period 1996 (Shine as the Light) to 2009 (The Torchbearer and Seize the Day). Within that time, Peter Graham has risen to the to ranks of brass and wind band composers.
