Reviewed by Phil Thomson

Ennio Morricone just does not come to mind as a natural wind composer. But then again, why not? The world of brass loves its adaptations, covers and arrangements and of all the disciplines, seems most at home with music from other styles. In this case, Dewhurst's arrangement of "A Fistful Of Dollars" creeps up on us in strident disguise to seduce us into believing it had been specifically written for flugel horn, trombone et al - delivered courtesy of those giants of the genre, Foden's. Of course, they keep good company - the album also featuring The Brighouse & Rastrick Band (Martin Ellerby's "Terra Australis"), "Psalms & Alleluias" by Philip Wilby from Tylorstown Band. You want a highlight? Okay then, Robin Dewhurst's "Mambo To Go" cheekily set up by Foden's Band and recorded during Foden's pre-results concert from the Albert Hall. It will be hard for the uninitiated to find any discernible difference between 1st Section bands and their compatriots, or the particularly quirky phrasing of a complicated cornet since the intensity and standard of these players is of such a high pitch and is intended almost entirely for the live competition: 73 bands competing for four National titles at the Harrogate International Centre, for instance. That's 2000 players! The whole package is enthusiastically written up in the extensive booklet - personalities, credits, commissions. In a world where music hall and high church can so easily sit side by side, this is as good as it gets.
