With their second full-length recording for Solid State, Embodyment have evolved almost beyond recognition. Gone are the incessant screaming, underpinned by over-familiar hardcore sonics, as found on 'Embrace The Eternal' ('98), in favour of a more varied sound and less alienating vocal style, thanks to new comer Sean Corbray. Best described as alternative hardcore, 'The Narrow Scope Of Things' blends the very best in alternative melodies with hard hilling sonics the more established fan would recognise. The result of such a timely change in direction is an all embracing musical statement, rooted in a more consistent reference base that is less alienating. Take, for instance, the emotive "One Less Addiction". In spite of the more obvious melodic approach, and the vulnerability of the lyrics found therein, Embodyment's overall musical vision remains intact. One only has to listen to the straight ahead hard core orientated "Assembly Line", or the groove sensibilities of "Prelude" to realise that the band have not lost sight of their harder edge; far from it. By taking much needed time out to reconsider their direction, Embodyment have returned with a solid set of hard-edged compositions that not only challenge, but also push back the well established, over familiar constraints of the hard core genre. If you are looking for some intelligently written and deftly executed art, then look no further than 'The Narrow Scope Of Things'.
