'The Best.Ever' series were once, of course, groundbreaking compilations which took worship modern worship music into Britain's supermarkets. In more recent times the series (now restricted to Christian bookshops) has enjoyed smaller sales as the compilers stretch the concept with slightly spurious concepts (like "new" on this volume). The album strives to be a collection of some of the most popular, freshly-minted worship songs around. It kicks off with a contribution from one of the most creative yet accessible worship bands around, David Crowder Band, inviting the presence of God in "Everything Glorious". Then we have Bluetree's classic "God Of This City", an impressive reminder that whatever is happening in our cities we have a message that is not only relevant to but is actually transforming people's lives. It was also a pleasure to hear Cathy Burton on this album and her charming and individual vocal style added to the compilation. My main reservation is that a lot of the songs just do not go far enough either in giving us a radical picture of the God we love and serve or in challenging our faith or shaking us up to wrestle with our doubts and fears. But then the worship songs of today that actually do that are few and far between. The standout of the album for me was Casting Crown's "Praise Him In The Storm". This is one of the few new worship songs to touch on lament. Nevertheless, this 3CD-set contains some solid performances by some of the best known worship artists, both British and American, and I'm sure it will bless many of the young worshippers who will snap up this release.

50 of the most popular new worship songs

There must be a way of measuring these things, some kind of mathematical formula that shows just how great a compilation really is. Well, whatever criteria you’re using – the amount of Dove Awards won, the frequency of songs sung or even the freshness of the passion unleashed – this triple album wins hands down.

From Chris Tomlin to Hillsong United, Stuart Townend to David Crowder band, Israel Houghton to Bluetree, this 50-strong compilation of the newest and best praise and worship songs has it all. Mighty To Save, You Never Let Go, Worship The Lord, There Is A Hope… the track listing is a who’s who and what’s hot that surpasses all others.

How’s that for a winning formula?
