The second volume of Ocean's 'Light From The Underground' compilations and to my ears a much better set than the first one even though, like its predecessor, it flings together several different styles of rock. In fact the opening act Rumours Of War are an indie pop team with a haunting girl lead (one Bethe Strahle) who on three numbers penned by guitarist husband Tom make understated, eery music crying out for student radio exposure. All the bands on this compilation come from California and the Recruits, with jangling guitars and an eclectic set of influences, excel, particularly on "I Wish I Could" with its hints of early U2. The Recruits exude class being recently named one of the "top 100 unsigned bands in America". Reminding me a little of the Choir are the Autumns with a nice line in ethereal drone and a young band Pushcart Wagon from LA with two stridently raw tracks. Rounding off this intriguing set is the last studio demo for the gone-but-not-forgotten thrash pioneers The Crucified. Much to intrigue and captivate and alternative fans should investigate.
