In recent years, the British blues world has come to realise just what a national treasure they have in blues guitarist Larry Miller and, whilst he deserves wider recognition akin to the likes Joe Bonamassa and John Mayer, this latest album will do his reputation no harm whatsoever. Crammed full of fiery powerhouse blues, it's clear from the get-go that Miller and his band (Graham Walker on drums and co-producer Neil Sadler on bass and keys) have never sounded better and, with the inclusion of strings on many of the tracks and the odd bit of brass here and there, Miller's sound is stronger and more epic than it's ever been - all of which serve to push the man's lived-in vocals and inventive guitarwork to the forefront. There is an overriding theme of broken down relationships and dangerous attractions with desperately honest songs such as "Failed Again" and "I Fight Myself" sitting next to tales of physical allure in "Mississippi Mama" and "The Power You Have" and, whilst there is an apparent absence of hope throughout this release, some measured optimism is found in the likes of "Our Time Is Coming". Nods to guitar greats such as Gary Moore, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page abound without ever compromising Miller's own identity as a supreme blues guitarist whilst the simply stunning depiction of King David's sexual temptation in "Bathsheba" and the emotive title track's tale of WW1 atrocity - inspired by the writer's soldier grandfather - sees Miller at the top of his songwriting game.
