Whilst John Featherstone's most recent releases have featured fuller soundscapes, this largely instrumental offering sees the British-born, Paris-based musician strip things back to the bare basics. Featuring only Featherstone on a seven string acoustic guitar and some occasional vocal improvisation from the man himself and singer Hannah Clair, this is a brave venture from an artist who is determined to push the boundaries of his chosen art form. Pieces such as "Canada" and "No Sun Without Shadows" showcase Featherstone's virtuoso guitar skills whilst the opener "Prelude" highlights the unique style of his uncommon instrument. In fact, such is Featherstone's mastery of the seven string guitar, the inclusion of his and Clair's vocal improvisations - especially some poor attempts at scat - seem largely unnecessary and fail to add any real value to the proceedings. Featherstone's faith is referenced in "Grace" and "Eastmas" - the latter taking the melody of the hymn "Thine Be The Glory" as its central point - whilst the jarring "Be" adds some gravitas to this otherwise airy and optimistic collection of tunes as the songwriter reflects upon his mother's death. Although this won't be to everyone's taste, this is an accomplished piece of work from one of France's most revered Christian artistes.
