Before singing the praises of this release we must issue two caveats. If you think this is the soundtrack recording of the 2013 Diamond Jubilee service at Westminster Abbey, it is not. Instead it is a collection of sacred music that has been used at royal occasions throughout Her Majesty's reign, from Handel's "Zadok The Priest" as played at every coronation since that of George II in 1727 through to the hymns "Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer" and "Love Divine", both of which were sung at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. And this leads us to our second caveat: most of the pieces on this 77 minute long CD are rightly popular and thus it follows that if you have any sort of collection of sacred choral music or hymnody you may find you already have versions of what is on offer here. Let it be said that this recording is very good indeed both in terms of audio quality and musicianship and I am sure no one would mind a little duplication but you may be wise to read the track listing before purchasing. The programme opens and closes in style with Purcell's "Trumpet Tune" being followed by "Zadok" at the start and Walton's March "Orb And Sceptre" and Gordon Jacob's rousing arrangement of a Fanfare and the National Anthem at the close. In between we have a wide selection of hymns, all well sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey, all of which have an association with events of Her Majesty's life. Thus we hear "Psalm 23: The Lord's My Shepherd" to "Crimond" which was, so the liner notes - and my parents - tell me was not a well-known tune until it was sung at the wedding of the Princess Elizabeth to Philip Mountbatten in 1947. In this recording we praise the treble solo of Timothy Dickinson and the oboe playing of Nicholas Daniel. Throughout the album there is good attention to detail with some nice arrangements and all solos being played to the highest standard. Particular standouts for this reviewer are Britten's "Jubilate In C" which was commissioned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh for the Choir of St George's Chapel, Windsor, and Howell's "Behold, O God, Our Great Defender" which was used in the Coronation Service of 1953. However there really is not a weak link anywhere in this collection and if you enjoy state music or merely want a souvenir from the Jubilee Year this is an easy recommendation, so long as you remember the caveats I mentioned above.
