Many Christian artists have over the years been referred to us as "the Christian version of." Unfortunately sometimes this has actually meant "a pale imitation of .", budget differences notwithstanding. Sometimes, however, an album has come along that begs for comparison with a secular artists but is nevertheless a worthy album in its own right. I cannot help listening to this recording and thinking Garbage. No, I mean the band! Drum loops, sampled noises and chunky post-grunge guitar strongly evoke Butch Big and Co. Further listens remind one of other female artists - "Pennyless" could be a new Sheryl Crowe track and hidden track "Pluto" might have strayed from Republica's album. None of this should detract from the unquestionable fact that 'Plumb' is a very strong album, although Christians who like lyrics speaking Scripture every stanza probably won't find this album to their liking. Most of the songs are fairly obviously about faith without mentioning God by name, although struggle is an equally common theme and some of the lyrics are pretty impenetrable. Unfortunately, I don't think that Silvertone will be able to make this one follow Delirious? up the charts, but that's more a reflection of Silverton's muscle than Plumb's quality. Yet another fine new American band to investigate.
