When female singer/songwriters seem to be two a penny it's brilliant when you find someone who can stop you in your tracks. The little girl delivery of the interestingly named Mancy is strongly reminiscent of Julie Miller and it's interesting that the same themes of brokenness seep out from under the surface of some of the songs here. There are gloriously groovy moments like the upbeat closing 'Camelot', the furious 'After The Rain', the organ tinged 'Hurricane' and the album curtain raiser 'Prettier Colours' where strong percussive beats and acoustic vibes underlay Mancy's vocal talents. But where things get really interesting is where she stretches out so for me, the unusual 'Mad On The Moon' and the slightly jazzy 'Daisy' both captivated me from the first listen. Don't know whether it was the interesting lyrical content or the quirky vocal delivery but both hit home. Elsewhere it's the incredible haunting vibe of 'Taboo' which is heart stoppingly vulnerable. Piano and string quartet paint the musical scene as Mancy describes the swirling gut wrenching memories of child abuse. Powerful but then Ms Kane seems to be endowed with serious songwriting talent!
