Reviewed by Joshua Mason

Following on from the well received 2004 worship album 'Abandon', Jason Morant returns with 'Open'. Reading Jason's bio on his website I discovered that he was working on this album last year when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans (where Jason is based), forcing him to relocate to Nashville. This obviously had a major effect on him and he took a slight detour to put together an EP to help Katrina victims. Jason has toured with the likes of Bebo Norman and Bethany Dillon and comes across as heartfelt and genuine in his music. The haunting guitar intro on the first track "Open" was a promising start. However, I felt a strong sense of familiarity - with hints of Delirious? and even Coldplay. I found Jason's mid range voice a little monotonous at times and much preferred it when he used his falsetto or when he just let go and rocked. Also, the majority of songs are quite slow and I would have liked to hear Jason do some edgier stuff as I think he has a great rock voice. Jason penned most of the 14 songs on the album himself and is obviously a gifted writer, musician and worship leader. However, with so many quality worship recordings coming out from the US from the likes of Jeremy Camp, Third Day and Phil Wickham, it is hard to stand out from the pack and this doesn't quite do that. However, for those willing to investigate, both "You're In Love", with Coldplay-like falsettos and a lyric that speaks of God's love for us, and "At Your Feet", with uplifting words and a moving chorus, do connect.

14 songs from the New Orleans worship leader.

For most of his life, 24-year old singer-songwriter Jason Morant has been a part of New Orleans, its church and its msic. His second release, Open, underscores the artistís gift for melody as colourful and textured as the city heís from. Itís equal parts rock, pop, folk and worship Ė heís inspired by all of it.
Open honours the cityís musical diversity through rich instrumentation that includes ambient strings and horns along with piano, dobro, banjo and accordion. Lyrically the songwriter exposes his range too, delving into personal subject matter and addressing the Church on issues near to his heart.
This enhanced CD features chord charts and lyric files for four songs. Additional chord charts and lyric files are available free from verticalmusic.com.
