Genre-crossing solo project from Christafari chanteuse Avion Blackman. |
|
Reviewed by Peter Dilley She may be a singer with Christafari, but sanctified reggae isn't the only genre that Avion Blackman brings into her solo project. The bi-lingual title cut has clear African music influences ("Onyinye" is Igbo for "Gift"), and "Marvellous Beauty" and "I'm Sorry" are smooth and soulful, with Avion's voice bearing comparison with Sade. "You'll Return" is a tender inspirational ballad, and "Show Me" is built around the "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" vibe and chord sequence. But "I Thank You" does have that classic reggae sound, as does the delightfully relaxed opener "I Love You Father". Poignantly, four of the tracks were written by Avion's sister April, who died at the age of 20 - the album is dedicated as a celebration of her life. It's a real shame she never got to hear the recordings of her songs.
