Patton is Northern Ireland's latest contribution to worship music. Released independently, the quality of the production is predictably unpolished and the sleeve design particularly dreadful. But wait. The songwriting is consistently remarkably strong and Patton's voice is very distinct and has that fragile, high-pitched edge, which together with the backing vocals create a highly emotional sound. Unfortunately a certain sloppiness of the band's ensemble work occasionally detracts from the great material that constitutes the CD. Despite these shortcomings the abandoned worship songs offered here tend to convey a joy which persists from the opening track "Glorious" to the final "Hold Me Close". Patton is certainly a voice and a writer to count on in the future. His recordings will get better.
