The growing group of followers of holy hip hop in Britain will have been aware of Unity Klan for (heir goodish 1997 album 'Eternal Funk'. But nothing quite prepared us for (his breathtaking set, which has to be in the running as one of the finest rap albums ever made and one which, with its breathtaking integration of vocals, praise moments, pastor sample and documentary fragments, almost qualifies 'One Day' as a concept album. Don't be fooled by the trad, gospel worship at the beginning. It's to get the band and the listener focused on Jesus, not to infer the crew have lost their street edge. Soon we're into some phat joints like "Who's In The House" with the sistah rapping good and strong and "Break It Down" where guest Tonex adds his considerable talents to a relentless groove. But possibly the most breathtaking moments are "Enemy's Camp" which uses the theatrical sounds of a slave ship (really!) to make its point about listening (o the enemy or the awesome warning not to be left behind on the Lord's return; or "What Cha Gonna Do" with its quirky blackly humorous novelty vocal chorus. An album, up (here with Lil' Rascull's 'Gory To Glory' classic (criminally still unreleased in the UK). 'One Day' is a milestone release which takes us on a breathtaking musical journey with one of THE musical forms of the new millennium.
