Starting, perhaps as expected, with "Amazing Grace" sung by Chris Tomlin, this is an interesting collection of modern day takes on classic hymns. Some of them work: for example "Holy, Holy, Holy" by Stephen Curtis Chapman and "My Jesus I Love Thee" by Bart Millard, which are easy on the ear contemporary reworkings which mix the old and new effectively; and some don't - "All Creatures Of Our God And King" by Bethany Dillon and Shawn McDonald, and "Fairest Lord Jesus" by Natalie Grant, both of which open promisingly then crash into a form of electro-pop. There's also an annoying tendency by some of the singers to "over warble" on some tracks where simple one pitch would surely suffice. We know they can sing, and for me this form of showing off takes away from the simple and pure beauty that exists in the old hymns, and their wonderful divinely inspired words. I loved "I Need Thee Every Hour" by Jars Of Clay and was surprised how moved I was by "Rock Of Ages" by David Crowder, and the interweaving of the beautiful mandolin, acoustic guitar and violin, over which Mr Crowder's distinctive voice almost struggles (recorded according to the sleevenotes on a bus in Mississippi!). This album is worth a listen for this track alone.
