Ever since William Becton and his friends first hit the streets back in 1994, they’ve been busily trying to carve a niche for themselves in the heavily populated rugby scrum that is gospel music. Although their work is typical of the genre, and better than most, they’ve suffered somewhat by not being regularly distributed in the UK and by not having as high a profile as better known acts such as Hezekiah Walker, John P Kee or The Tommies. At least the distribution problem may now have been solved, with Spirit Music handling things, so will this live album, a follow-up to his earlier ‘Broken’ project, and which includes the 16 Friends and several guest vocalists besides, help to raise his profile? Sadly, I think not. The CD is good value at nearly an hour, the congregation at the Community Christian Church dutifully goes bananas at all the right moments and William can do a fair bit of rabble-rousing when he has to, but there’s an air of predictability about it all, as if everyone concerned has been programmed to produce the desired result. It’s a good CD in among a plethora of good CDs, without the secret ingredient to lift it from the merely good to the excellent.
