Although this album exhibits a quiet talent and excellent quality of production, it also illustrates a problem almost endemic in much Christian music: the '80s is over, popular taste has moved on. Wet Wet Wet, perhaps the closest musical comparison, no longer top the charts. Yes, people still sing along when their old favourite comes on the radio, but this is perhaps more related to the individual memories and associations such a song evokes; as a result, there is little room for original material in the genre. And yes, we are currently seeing an '80s revival in the secular music charts, but this tends to be more focused on the dance pop of boy and girl bands. In short, this album could have so easily reached way beyond the Christian ghetto, yet it entirely fails to do so. Stringer's voice is pitch-perfect, captured and complemented flawlessly, but undoubtedly sounds dated. It is such a shame to see such superlative materials expertly Grafted only to produce something so inherently passe. Even the cover seems to emulate a Nick Berry publicity shot. Like the England football team of the European Cup, it is saddening to see so much on-paper-talent misfire and fail to achieve all they deserve.

I got this CD-R for 50p in a charity shop near where Steve actualy lives (no doubt a quietly disposed of sympathy purchase by a fellow paritioner). Sure he's got a nice enough voice but the overall sound is just so dated and bland.

That said, a couple of the songs did provide the raw materials for some fun re-mixes by my noise band, both of which have been freely distributed around the P2P mp3 and home taping circuits for about 18 month now...

Steve Stringer was my next door neighbour in England for more than 20 years, and he was a good friend and we went to the same school in Manchester.

My mother posted the cd "I want to make you smile"
The first song which I listen`d was the song "Iwant to make you smile" And I thought this is going to be a good cd!!!
I do like a few songs on the cd, but the "I want you smile" song to be the best.
And I like "Things are different now" very much!!

Steve`s voice is in the same league as Cliff Richard in my opinion and Its a shame that Steve Hasīnt continue`d with another follow up cd!!

If the song "I want to make you smile" was sung by Cliff Richard, then Im sure it would have got to number 1.

Cheers from Steve Hughes

By the way Steve Stringer now lives in Australia.
And Steves mum still visits my mum for a visit once a week for a chat.
