Forget all those endless arguments about crossover compromise or can real gospel make the pop charts. Just listen to what Britain's best loved gospel choir do to Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door". This is the exquisite version the great song always demanded. Elsewhere cover versions (sorry, revivals) work equally well. Some have criticised LCGC's version of "Come Go With Me (I'll Take You There)" and though I'd be the first to admit that the sister doing the wailing isn't quite the equal of Mavis Staples it's still a great example of how to make a 70s soul opus, utterly contemporary. Only the choir's version of Sly And The Family Stone's "You Can Make It If You Try" falls a bit flat but the contemporary soul-cum-gospel on the Temptations' "Ball Of Confusion" and the capper, the wondrous acappella version of the old spiritual "Hush", make for a great album.
