Here's an independent release from an American artist who is difficult to pin down. She's lived in 22 different apartments in the last dozen years and I guess it's fair to say that lately she's been living in Nashville! Soon Jenny will be living over here attending Bible College in London and writing songs on English soil. Like many independent releases coming out of America, this is well produced so the overall sound is good. However without an A&R man to guide her, some of the material here leaps out of the speakers whilst some of it is less remarkable. Jenny's got a strong pop rock voice and I actually prefer it when she lets loose a little. Not convinced about some of the softer material here but there are moments that caught my attention. The opening excellent "Let Me Be" begins in a Bon Jovi "Bed Of Roses" fashion and turns out to be a power ballad that really shows off her skills. The title cut features some understated Phil Keaggy guitar work on a piano ballad which is so understated that I missed it the first two times I heard the song. "Getting It Together" is more like it with plenty of Hammond and a rockier edge and some backing vocals from John Schlitt, like Keaggy turned down so you'd never know. I guess that's the benefit of living in Nashville. Elsewhere "His Mercy", "He's Alive" and "Everyday" all plod along, as does "Did You Call Me". Even though it is enhanced with some lovely sax, there's not enough variety to really arrest me. Some nice touches but this quickly runs out of steam.
