The History Makers series is rediscovering some excellent early contemporary Christian music hidden in the vaults. This collection gathers together a set of worship songs from the mid ‘70s to mid ‘80s. At the height of the charismatic renewal and before we had the outbreak of the modern worship phenomenon, it’s good to remember how we used to worship. To modern ears some of this does seem a little cheesy but if like me you were there, this resonates with the power of more innocent times. Karen Lafferty’s wistful “Seek Ye First” was the first worship song I ever heard and along with Andrae Crouch’s “Bless His Holy Name”, these are the two songs on the collection that crossed over into general church use in the UK. Other songs from Keith Green, Barry McGuire, 2nd Chapter Of Acts, Michael & Stormie Omartian and Steve Green are all very well but stretch the idea of a praise and worship collection. “Petra’s Praise Ye The Lord” comes from the very successful Petra Praise album which launched the concept of rock praise! (And they’d found a decent singer by then!) To be honest this is the weakest collection in the History Makers series and a bit disappointing.
