On paper, to have Europe's top brass bands giving their all live on a double CD set should be a satisfying listen, but does it deliver? On the most part yes, there are certainly some top rate performances here, recorded at Linz, Austria. For example the winners, Welsh collective The Cory Band, deliver the dazzling "A Tale As Yet Untold" (written especially for the event) but also a bizarre (and frankly tedious) "Spiriti" which according to the notes refers to the spirits of Bach and Bruckner whose works inspired the piece! However, I did enjoy their brass band "Tribute To Glen Miller". Other highlights for me were "Dixieland Medley" (Brass Band Oberosterreich) and "Three Chorales", which includes "Abide With Me" performed by the massed bands of Austrian Youth and European Youth. All in all then, this is a curate's egg release - good in parts.
