Back in the day Jerry Wilson was touched by the music of the South Californian indie rock scene of the '80s. 20 years later, a special event in 2005 brought many of the bands back together again and Wilson was still moved and inspired by the music. Many of the artists involved are still passionate about their faith so Wilson's book sees him interviewing some of the main protagonists of the era and a few more obscure artists as well. Big hitters like Mike Roe (77s) Steve Taylor, Derri Daugherty (The Choir), Mike Stand (Altar Boys) Joe Taylor (Undercover) and Terry Taylor (Daniel Amos) tell their stories. Mainly it's about the struggle to record the music they wanted to make, the resistance of the more conservative elements within churches and the many diverse ways a record label can rip off an artist. There are definite common themes that emerge and it's amazing that more of these guys haven't become disillusioned about their faith. Less well known bands like 4.4.1, Barnabas and Veil Of Ashes make an appearance too and if you haven't heard any of their music, these interviews could kick start an effort to find out about them. Jerry is a thorough interviewer and you get a picture of a vibrant scene but the book is bitter sweet because you're left wondering how things might have been if the artists chronicled here hadn't been left so discouraged by the lack of royalties and apathy of the wider Church. Still, as the title suggests, many continue to walk with God and pursue creative endeavours. For Christian music buffs, this is a great introduction to an exciting period of music, barely covered elsewhere.
