Reviewed by Terry Bateman This is the re-release after 10 years of what is a classic album and it could easily have fitted into several categories, but I have gone for rock because the sound that so marks out dc Talk on later albums is first really defined here. There are some great songs here and for me the standout tracks include “Luv Is A Verb”; “Say The Words”; “Word 2 The Father” and a brilliant cover of the Doobie Brother’s “Jesus Is Just Alright”. This album reached Grammy award-winning heights and went platinum first time around. A must have for newer dc Talk fans who made first contact with the band via albums like ‘Jesus Freak’ and ‘Supernatural’. What makes this such a good album is a combination of great songs, great production, a healthy irreverence for convention, positive and honest lyrics, the tackling of real issues (such as race and sexuality) and not least some great musicians (check out the line up of guitarists which includes George Cocchini, Dann Huff and Jerry Macpherson). I have to confess to being a real fan of this band so I am probably a little biased in my views. That said, this album set the pace 10 years ago and is still remarkably fresh and contemporary now. The world of contemporary music needs more like these guys – strong, vibrant faith that is communicated with relevance. Essential listening – buy it and play it loud – your ears and soul will love you for it. More from dc TalkSee all...
