This CD by a Burton-on-Trent-based musician is a concept album exploring the life and heart of King David through his relationship with God, his wife Bathsheba and his best friend Jonathan. I can see that a lot of work has gone into the writing of this project, with the different facets of David's life having been carefully thought through and lyrics crafted to match them. The joyful, heartbroken and guilty times in the life of this wonderfully human king are dealt with and Steve has a strong voice that seems to deal effortlessly with every note. The musical performances are good and in particular I thought that there is some lovely cello and flute playing that adds to the life of the music, although occasionally the drums sound a little wooden. Yet I have to say that the album leaves me a little dissatisfied as doesn't seem consistent. I know there are good reasons for a degree of diversity, but while much of the quieter tracks remind me of John Michael Talbot or Michael Card, these are interspersed with what sound like '80s rock opera tracks with Bon Jovi guitar solos and they sound as if they're from a completely different record from a different era. Such production inconsistency spoilt the overall impact of the record.
