This is the first offering from Dumfries-based Currie in around eight years. It's an interesting collection of songs covering worship, biblical stories, the challenges of belief and, as the title suggests, some of the darker moments in life; all with just Currie's vocal and acoustic guitar. It has to be said that he does an excellent job of keeping it varied enough to keep your attention, when it could have all too easily ended up being 55 minutes of strumming, although you're four songs in before the title track suddenly drops the mood considerably. Currie isn't afraid to use his experiences of life for song material (title track, "My Prayer", "All You Ever Wanted") in addition to more biblical themes ("Emmaus Road", "The Promise"), although lyrically it gets a little bogged down in "translation" sometimes, or is perhaps a little too wordy. The guitar playing is solid and the vocal strong with a classical edge to it, none more so than on a rewritten version of the classic hymn "Take My Life". Having said that, it is missing something, and I think just a little extra instrumentation here and there would have made all the difference. But certainly worth checking out if you like that acoustic singer/songwriter style.
