Reviewed by Andy Shaw You know what you are getting with Solid State Records. They consistently find and put out some of the finest metal bands on the scene and Atlanta, Georgia's Becoming The Archetype are no exception. There has been a significant personnel change since 'The Physics Of Fire' in 2007. Alex Kenis has left to be replaced by the band's original guitarist, Jon Star. This gives a slightly different dynamic to the album. There are however guest appearances on the album including Ryan Clark of Demon Hunter, who's sung bridge on the outstanding "Dichotomy" provides fine contrast to the classic roar of frontman Jason Wisdom. Right from the start the album has an anthemic feel with the rousing introduction to "Mountain Of Souls" containing the guest vocals of the album's producer, Devin Townsend, of the wonderfully named Strapping Young Lad. The strength of this album is in its variety. This is shown by the massive contrast as the jagged and abrasive "Self Existent" full of varying time signatures fades out to give way to the gentle plucking of instrumental track "St Anne's Lullaby". There is also a full on metal reworking of the hymn "How Great Thou Art" which has become a fan favourite in their live shows. The impressive technical musicality coupled with the passionate and sincere vocals and lyrics displayed here make this a treat for any metal fan. More from Becoming The ArchetypeSee all...
