A major American CCM talent returns with a fine album. |
|
Reviewed by Tony Cummings As far as Cross Rhythms is concerned, Steve Camp has long been one of the most arresting and impassioned talents in American Christian music and apart from a misjudged attempt at doing middle of the road praise music, he’s made consistently excellent albums as well as being a thorn in the flesh of the Nashville CCM industry, boldly critiquing its excesses. Now he returns with a fine new album. The opener “Why, Why, Why” shows he’s lost none of his touch with powerful lyrics (“Twin Towers falling down right out of the sky/Why, why, why/Texas mother dooms her children to die/Why, why, why/Whole generation lost in AIDS and cocaine/Why, why, why/People believe they die and come back and live like Shirley MacLaine/Why, why, why”). Able to cover tender, haunting ballads, dramatic songs of prophetic resonance and punchy pop rock opuses, throughout the singer/songwriter exudes gritty passion. A quality album from one of American Christian music’s most important figures. More from Steve CampSee all...
