Let me take you on a trip, down memory lane to a little town called Smithdale, Mississippi - and a small church called Rosehill Missionary Baptist Church, back in the 1950-70s. It's where the Gospel is preached and sung with such conviction that the Jackson Southernaires testify that the Lord has brought them such a "Mighty Long Way" (Track 12). This is a compilation of Gospel music recordings by the original artists straight out of the Bible belt of the USA that has remained untainted by rock and roll, or drum machines, as it sounds like it pre-dated both. Surprisingly, it doesn't come across as dated as the unchanging truth of the Gospel is eternal. Several of the tracks perfect the art of using the same blues riff all the way through, without getting overused, building the worship into a hectic crescendo. The seminal vocals of Mahalia Jackson are an absolute showstopper, and she deserves comparison with the likes of Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, although the track is quite different is musical style to the rest of the complication. Lots of great names from the 50s and 60s including Shirley Caesar and the Caravans, Angelic Gospel Singers, Rev James Cleveland and The Sensational Nightingales. As the third album in a series, this is to be commended as a worthy lesson if the history of Gospel music. Even those familiar with the genre will find something new - or should that be old?
