Hesitantly described by Nashville songwriter Peterson as a musical about the birth of Christ, this is nowhere close to what you would expect to hear on a run of the mill Christmas release or in the theatres of Broadway! In reality, it is an epic journey from Old Testament segments through to the coming of the Messiah. From the outset, it is evident that Peterson has an immense passion for Christ, as well as an astounding talent for songwriting and recording which ensures that his message is portrayed in an accessible fashion with no compromise on quality. Each song is a highlight - from "Passover Us" (a clear and poignant telling of God's protection of his people from the curses placed on their enemies) to the gentle song of praise "Behold The Lamb Of God". Peterson cleverly intersperses the proceedings with a few surprise moments such as an instrumental version of "The Holly And The Ivy" and the tongue-in-cheek genealogical song "Matthew's Begats" which list Christ's tongue-tying descendants from Abraham to Joseph - the latter just happens to feature the legendary Ron Block (of Alison Krauss and Union Station fame) on banjo. Elsewhere, vocalist Jill Phillips is given centre stage on "Labor Of Love" - a tender and sincere depiction of Mary's experience on the night of Christ's birth which demonstrates the true extent of Peterson's songwriting talent. The standout track for me is the breathtaking rendition of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" as arranged by guitarist Gabe Scott. It would be worthwhile to buy this album for this song alone just to experience the sheer chemistry between Scott's guitar and Kyle Reeder's mandolin. 'Behold The Lamb Of God' is an entertaining, charming and uplifting telling of a true tale which is as relevant today as it was then - you will not be disappointed.
