The debut release from a Canadian pop/rock outfit with folk and jazz tinges.

Reviewed by Chris Sharp

Recently signed to Inpop Records, Canada's Article One's self-titled debut offers a mix of soft rock which, whilst not the most innovative album on the streets, abounds in clear, catchy pop melodies and jazz/folk-tinged vibes, which will appeal to a wide audience. Citing Bono amongst their influences, the band's name is taken from Article I of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." Matt Piché's energetic violin work is exemplary and lifts the tunes penned by brother Nathan. Whilst present on all the tracks a great example of this is in the track "In No Time At All", a song about appreciating the things around us and not leaving things undone. Along with drummer Dave DeSmit, the three combine to produce some great harmonies that together give the band their own sound. All in all, an impressive pitch at the international scene.
