The problem with the 'Timeless Classics' series is that much of the material that has limped out of the vaults and into the digital daylight of CD has been neither timeless nor a classic. The subtitle too is misleading as these tracks are not Blackwood Brothers' oldies but are instead the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, the last group James formed after he was forced to leave The Masters Five due to ill health. What you get here are James' groups' renditions of old Blackwood Brothers' songs. If you are a Southern gospel enthusiast you might enjoy songs like "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" or the live recording of "I Want To Be More Like Jesus" and they may bring back happy memories but the inclusion of painful pap like "Speak The Name" seems pointless. If the recent Blackwood Brothers article in Cross Rhythms encouraged you to explore the historic roots of Southern gospel, you might want to investigate this but you'd do better by hunting out Blackwood Brothers originals.

I am confused. The album title is "The James Blackwood Quartet: Timeless Classics. The review, however talks about the "recordings here from a 21 year stint with the RCA Victor label". The James Blackwood Quartet did not record for RCA. This was the last quartet James formed and was after he was forced to leave the Masters V due to poor health.

Are the recordings on this album by the Blackwood Brothers Quartet or are the The James Blackwood Quartets renditions of the Blackwood Borthers earlier recordings?

Thanks for the opportunity to comment and ask this question.
